HVAÐA “ALÞJÓÐASAMFÉLAG” ER AÐ BREGÐAST? - WHO IS TO BLAME?
Framvindan á Gaza, gegndarlaust ofbeldið, grefur undan trú fólks á alþjóðasamfélaginu sagði Kristrún Frostadóttir forsætisráðherra í viðtali í Ríkisútvarpinu í morgun, og játaði vanmátt sinn og íslenskrar ríkisstjórnar frammi fyrir þessum ósköpum. Bætti því reyndar við að áherslubreyting hefði orðið í þessum efnum frá síðustu stjórnarskiptum á Íslandi; var svo að skilja á forsætisráðherranum að gagnrýni íslenskra stjórnavalda væri nú orðin skeleggari. Sannast sagna kem ég ekki auga á neina stefnubreytingu af Íslands hálfu. ”Við verðum með ef aðrir eru með …” segir utanríkisráðherrann! Og eins og hjá fyrri ríkisstjórn “hefur Ísrael rétt á að verja sig”!
Í fyrsta lagi hefur ekkert ríki hvorki Ísrael né nokkuð annað ríki rétt á að verja sig á þann hátt sem Ísrael þykist vera að gera, “vörnin” er reyndar skálkaskjól fyrir þjóðernishreinsanir, þjóðarmorð!
Í öðru lagi má gagnrýna framsetningu forsætisráðherrans á “alþjóðasamfélaginu” sem hafi brugðist í hugum fólks. Alþjóðaglæpadómstóllinn vill lögsækja Netanyahu fyrir stríðsglæpi og er fyrir vikið ofsóttur af hálfu bandarískra stjórnvalda. Sama á við um talsmann Sameinuðu þjóðanna í málefnum Palestínu, Francescu Albanese, sem hefur staðið sig firnavel en sætir ofsóknum af hálfu helstu bandalagaríkja Íslands. Allsherjarþing Sameinuðu þjóðanna hefur margoft ályktað gegn landráni í Palestínu og krafist þess að samþykktir SÞ verði virtar. Ísraelsmenn hafa hins vegar komist upp með að virða alþjóðasamfélagið að vettugi í skjóli Bandaríkjanna og bandamanna þeirra.
Í þriðja lagi er þetta einmitt mergurinn málsins. Sá hluti „alþjóðasamfélagsins“ sem hefur brugðist eru bandalagsríki Íslands í NATÓ. Það eru þau sem hafa brugðist og eru enn að bregðast, senda vopn til morðsveitanna, fangelsa fólk sem mótmælir ofbeldinu – á þann hátt sem ekki fellur innan þröngra skilgreininga um ríkið sem hefur „rétt til að verja sig.“
Nú þykja það miklar fréttir að einhver þessara bandalagsríkja Íslands ætla að viðurkenna Palestínu sem sjálfstætt ríki. En var það ekki meiningin árið 1948? Stóð ekki til þá að skipta landi Palestínumanna í tvö ríki, Ísrael og Palestínu? Var það ekki ákvörðun sem tekin var á vettvangi Sameinuðu þjóðanna fyrir 77 árum? Nú bíða allir átekta og vilja vita hvar landamæri Palestínu liggi, hvort þess verði krafist að landránsbyggðum zíonista verði skilað í samræmi við ákvörðun SÞ á sínum tíma, eða hvort allt verður áfram í plati, allt til að sýnast. Allt þetta ofbeldi – þjóðarmorð ofan í landrán, fangelsanir, pyntingar – viðgengst vegna þess að nýlenduríkin, gömul og ný – bandalagsríki Íslands í NATÓ – gera ofbeldi Ísraelsstjórnar gerlegt. En þetta er ekki "alþjóðasamfélagið". Þetta eru ríkin sem eru að eyðileggja alþjóðasamfélagið.
Það eru þau sem hafa brugðist fórnarlömbunum á Gazsa. Það eru þau sem hafa brugðist alþjóðasamfélaginu.

WHO IS TO BLAME?
The relentless violence taking place in Gaza is undermining people's faith in the “international community”, said Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir in an interview on Icelandic National Broadcasting this morning, and admitted everybody´s, including herself and the Icelandic government's helplessness in the face of these atrocities. She added that there indeed had been a change of course or rather emphasis since her government came to office half a year ago; it was to be understood that Iceland now had become more critical of Israel and more vocal in its criticism. I must admit that I for one do not see any change on Iceland's part. "We will be with others if others are doing something ..." says the Foreign Minister! And as with the previous government, Israel has the right to defend itself!
Here the following needs to be said:
First of all, no state, neither Israel nor any other state, has the right “to defend itself” the way Israel claims to be doing. This justification is simply a cover for ethnic cleansing, genocide!
Secondly, the Prime Minister’s portrayal of the “international community” as having failed in the public mind must be taken with reservations. The International Criminal Court thus wants to prosecute Netanyahu for war crimes but is in turn being persecuted by the US government. The same applies to the UN spokesperson on Palestinian issues, Francesca Albenese, who has done a great job but is being persecuted by Iceland’s main allies. And then of course the great majority within the UN – the general assembly – has time and again called for Israel to respect Palestinian rights. But Israel has ignored this call from the international community and managed to do so with the help of the US and its allies.
This of course is the crux of the matter. The part of the “international community” that has failed are Iceland’s NATO allies. They are the ones who have failed and are still failing, sending weapons to the perpetrator, imprisoning people who protest the genocide – if their criticism does not fall within the narrow definition of a critique of a state that has the “right to defend itself.”
Now it is seen to be big news that some of Iceland´s NATO allies are contemplating recognizing Palestine as an independent state. But wasn’t that the intention in 1948? Wasn't it then decided to divide Palestinian land into two states, Israel and Palestine? Wasn't that a decision made at the United Nations 77 years ago?
Now it remains to be seen what this belated recognition of Palestine really means; where the borders of this “recognized” Palestine lie, whether it will be demanded that the Zionist land-grabbing settlements be returned in accordance with the UN decision in 1948 or whether everything will remain as it is, all for show. All this violence – genocide on top of land-grabbing, mass-imprisonment, torture – is happening because the colonial powers, old and new – Iceland's NATO allies – make the violence of the Israeli government possible. But neither NATO nor the European Union deserve to be referred to as “the international community". On the contrary, these are the states that are to blame; they are destroying the international community.
