LÖGÐU NIÐUR VOPN EN LEGGJA UPP Í NÝJA VEGFERÐ – HINA LÝÐRÆÐISLEGU
Á spjöldum sögunnar verður ellefti júlí skráður sem sögufrægur dagur. Þann dag lögðu 30 hermenn, 15 karlar og 15 konur úr Kúrdíska verkamannaflokknum, PKK, niður vopn á samkomu í Sulaimaniyah, annarri stærstu borg kúrdíska hluta Íraks, Başûrê Kurdistanê eða Suður-Kúrdistan.
Myndböndin sem sjá má á slóðum hér að neðan sýna aðdragandann, þá fyrst ávarp Abdullah Öcalan, helsta leiðtoga Kúrda, þar sem hann talar frá fangelsi sínu á Imrali eyju; síðan hermenn að koma eftir neðanjarðargöngum úr sundur gröfnum Qandil fjöllunum í Írak þar sem skæuliðaherir Kúrda hafa einkum hafst við í óvinnandi vígi.
Á baráttusveitum Kúrda er engan bilbug að finna. Samt leggja þeir niður vopn. Eða er það ef til vill þess vegna sem þeir hafa hugrekki til að feta nýjar slóðir! Það er upplýsandi að skoða þessi myndbönd til þess að skilja atburðarásina og þá stöðu sem nú er uppi.
Enginn er að gefast upp, það er einfaldlega verið að skipta um gír. Vopnin fóru á eldinn en eldurinn á að glæða nýja baráttu, baráttu fyrir lýðræði. Við ætlum ekki að skapa neitt tómarúm, segir Öcalan. Í stað tómarúms kemur lýðræði. Myndum einingar – kommúnur - til að halda utan um lýðræði, frelsi og mannréttindi. Allir eiga að fá sinn sess, allir þjóðflokkar, trúarhópar, allir, allir. Ríkin mega sigla sinn sjó, en ekki lýðræðið og mannréttindin. Þannig komumst við til áhrifa, með lýðræðið að vopni. Þetta er inntakið í boðskap Öcalans sem birtist í febrúarlok og um sumt ítrekað í ávarpi hans nýlega.
Þetta er annar tónn en frá nokkrum öðrum í Mið-Austurlöndum þar sem nánast allir hópar berast á banaspjót og undir rær Ísrael og gömlu nýlenduveldin sem jafnan þykjast vera að stilla til friðar. Staðreyndin er sú að á svæði þar sem um aldir mismunandi hópar lifðu í sátt hefur verið barist án afláts síðan Vesturlönd fóru að að hræra í málum þessa svæðis sjálfum sér til hagsbóta. Og nú er þessum illu öflum sem þar hafa ráðið - því ill eru þau - að takast að sundra og eyðileggja öll grannríki Ísraels. Það þykir varla fréttnæmt lengur að Ísraelear slátri daglega Sýrlendingum og Líbönum í loftárásum. Ísrael hafi jú rétt til að verja sig!
En nú kemur andsvarið frá Kúrdum: Lýðræði í stað vopna!
Fyrst var reynt að eyðileggja þjóðarvitund okkar, segir Öcalan. Það tókst ekki. Við erum til og þeim tókst ekki heldur að brjóta okkur á bak aftur. En látum það ekki gerast að við festumst í þráskák; hefjum okkur upp úr hjólförunum og inn í nýja tíma með nýjum áherslum, nýjum aðferðum. Þetta er andinn í boðskap hans.
Hér kveður heldur betur við annan tón en hjá NATÓ-ríkjunum, þar með talið Íslandi. Þau tala fyrir vígvæðingu og mana hvert annað til að verja sem allra mestum fjármunum til hennar.
Mér var boðið að vera viðstaddur hina sögufrægu athöfn þar sem baráttusveitirnar úr Qandil fjöllunum kvöddu vopnin. Því miður var ég svo bundinn í báða skó að ég gat ekki með nokkru móti þekkst boðið.
Fátt hefur mér þótt eins erfitt að afþakka og þetta boð um að verða vitni að mannsandanum rísa á öld sem þarf á því að halda sem aldrei fyrr að skynsemi og velvilji fái vísað veginn.

FAREWELL TO ARMS - THE WAY FORWARD IS THE DEMOCRATIC WAY
July 11th will go down in history as a day to be remembered. On that day, 30 fighters, 15 men and 15 women, from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK, laid down their arms at a ceremony in Sulaimaniyah, the second largest city in the Kurdish part of Iraq, Başûre Kurdistanê or Southern Kurdistan.
The videos that can be seen in the links below show preparations leading up to the event, first a speech by Abdullah Öcalan, the Kurdish leader, speaking from the prison on Imrali Island where he has been held captive for more than quarter of a century; then soldiers coming parading through underground tunnels in the Qandil Mountains, where Kurdish guerrillas have over the years created an invincible stronghold.
There is no sign of defeat or surrender amongst the Kurdish fighters. This may indeed be the reason why they have the courage to seek new ways to reach their objectives!
It's worth watching these videos and try to grasp the underlying reasons for this radical change in tactics amounting to a paradigm shift. Here it must be said that the Kurdish leadership has always wanted a lasting peace – but peace with dignity. And here there is no change.
No one is giving up, there is no surrender. The weapons went to the fire, but this also has a symbolic meaning since the fire is meant to ignite a new struggle, a struggle for democracy. We are not going to create a vacuum, there is in fact no such thing as vacuum in politics, says Öcalan. Instead of a vacuum, democracy will be created. Now the task is to form democratic units - communes – a framework for democracy and human rights. Democratic confederalism will be created where everyone should have a place, all ethnic groups, religious groups, all people, everyone! Let us forget about the state, but not democracy and human rights. That's how we will achieve our goals, that is how we will manage our lives, with democracy as a weapon, a tool for building a future. This is more or less Öcalan’s argumentation as I understand it from his most recent statement and statements from him earlier in the year.
This is a different tone from others – I dare say all other political spokesmen in the Middle East, where almost all groups are at each other's throats being urged on by Israel and the ever present old and new colonial powers, always pretending to be making peace.
Of course there have been conflicts, wars, oppression in the Middle East as in most parts of the world, but from history we nevertheless learn that generally speaking it can be said that in this region different nationalities and different ethnic and religious groups, lived for centuries in relative harmony. It is Western colonialism which is to blame for the tragedies the world has witnessed in this part of the world for more than a century, ever since the advent of Western colonialism with its well tested method of divide and rule, divide et impera as the Romans put it.
And now these evil forces - because that is what they are - evil -are succeeding in driving apart and destroying all of Israel's neighbouring countries. It is hardly mentioned in main-stream news media that Israel daily attacks Lebanon and Syria killing innocent people, not to mention the massacre in Gaza, the dictum being: Israel has the right to defend itself!
But now all this is being challenged, not by weapons, but by a call for pece, reconciliation, respect for human rights and democracy!
First, they tried to destroy our identity, says Öcalan. It did not work. We exist and they did not succeed in breaking our resistance either. But don´t let it happen that we get stuck in a stalemate; let's move into a new era with radically new methods.
This is a different voice and a different message to what we hear from NATO countries! NATO envisages a future with increased militarization, more weapons, more killing capacity. And in every single NATO country – including my own, Iceland – this is supported.
I was invited to attend the historic ceremony where the fighting forces from the Qandil Mountains laid down their arms. Unfortunately, my situation was such that I could not in any way accept the invitation as much as I would have liked.
But although far away, in spirit I was at the ceremony, witnessing the rise of the human spirit. After all we are living in an age where the world more than ever needs to let wisdom and goodwill guide the way.
