LISTENING TO LEO - HLUSTAÐ Á PÁFA – GREETINGS TO FRIENDS
Ávarp Leo XIV páfa til sendiherra erlendra ríkja í Páfagarði föstudaginn níunda janúar hefur vakið verðskuldaða athygli og þykir mér talað þar af meira viti en gerist og gengur í heiminum um þessar mundir.
Yfirgengilegast er náttúrlega það sem vellur upp úr Bandaríkjaforseta með hótunum hans og hernaði. Hótanirnar eru nefnilega ekki bara orðin tóm heldur fylgja þeim morð og mannrán.
As I send my foreign friends new years greetings I share some thoughts in the light of recent developments:
On both our sides of the Icelandic rig, where Iceland is sitting, militarization is on the rise – I want to rule the western hemisphere and elsewhere as well, says Trump while the European Union wants a European army and to “get Europe into a military mode” ( Charles Michel President of the EU council March 2024) and German chancellor Mertz says he is “not afraid of war.” He has “completely lost his fear”. (June 2025).
With people like these at the helm there is indeed reason to be afraid of war and we should resist and protest money to be taken out of our hospitals and schools to feed the weapons industry. Iceland´s best defence, I have emphasized, in the light of developments - west of us and east of us - should be to align with those who want peace and disarmament. Fairness and justice is our best defence while the revival of the colonial spirit which seeks to justify the grabbing of raw materials and subjugation of nations will eventually bring us catastrophe.
Most of us are of course shocked by what we see in the NATO part of the world - but this is how the third world has envisaged the colonial powers for the last three hundred years!
In the light of all this it was heartening to see the message coming from Rome when Pope Leo XIV addressed foreign ambassadors to the Vatican on January 9th. (see below).

Páfi sagði meðal annars: „Það er sárt að sjá hvernig í sívaxandi mæli þrengt er að tjáningarfrelsi, sérstaklega á Vesturlöndum. Á Orwellskan hátt er sagt að allir séu velkomnir til umræðunnar um leið og þeir eru i reynd útilokaðir frá henni.“
Leó XIV páfi hvatti til aukinna samskipta vegna vaxandi hnattrænnar spennu og aukinnar hættu á kjarnorkustríði. „Stríð er aftur í tísku“ sagði hann og kunni það ekki góðri lukku að stýra.
Venesúela, Palestína, Úkraína
Páfinn vék að handtöku Nicolas Maduro, forseta Venesúela, og konu hans, Cilia Flores, nýlega:
„Grafið hefur verið undan þeirri meginreglu sem sett var eftir seinni heimsstyrjöldina að ríki skyldu virða landamæri og ekki beita valdi handan þeirra … Ég endurnýja ákall mitt um að virða vilja venesúelsku þjóðarinnar og vernda mannréttindi og borgaraleg réttindi allra, tryggja stöðugleika og samstöðu“.
Páfi kallaði eftir „tafarlausu vopnahléi“ í Úkraínu og lýsti yfir stuðningi sínum við tveggja ríkja lausn til að koma á friði í Mið-Austurlöndum, en jafnframt veita Palestínumönnum „framtíð varanlegs friðar og réttlætis í eigin landi.“
Hnignun fjölþjóðahyggju
Leó páfi harmaði það sem hann kallaði hnignun í fjölþjóðahyggju og alþjóðlegu samstarfi sem gæti leitt til friðar í stað vopnaðra átaka.
Vilji menn aðeins frið á eigin forsendum þá væru menn á sömu vegferð og leiddi til tveggja heimsstyrjalda á 20. öldinni. En á endanum hafi verið stofnað til Sameinuðu þjóðanna, sem páfinn sagði að væri falið að „vernda frið, verja grundvallarmannréttindi og stuðla að sjálfbærri þróun.“
Gervigreind og hætta á kjarnorkustríði
Meðal annarra mála sem páfinn fjallaði um var tilkoma gervigreindar. Hann hvatti til endurnýjaðra aðgerða til að stjórna útbreiðslu kjarnorkuvopna og minnti á að START-samningurinn (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) rennur út í febrúar.
Þá lagði Leo páfi áherslu á að tilkoma gervigreindar krefðist „viðeigandi og siðferðilegrar stjórnunar“ til að tryggja að hún sé notuð til að bæta heiminn og samfélög hans og valdi ekki skaða.
Hann fjallaði einnig um málefni sem varða fólksflutninga, mansal og glæpi og varaði við því að „grafa undan reisn farandfólks og flóttamanna“.

Pope Leo XIV warns against 'zeal for war' amid global tensions
Pope Leo XIV urged greater communication amid rising global tensions and an increased potential for nuclear war while delivering his State of the World address in Vatican City on Friday.© Stefano Spaziani/UPI
Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Pope Leo XIV warned that "war is back in vogue" in his State of the World address Friday to ambassadors who are accredited to the Holy See.
The annual meeting is one of the most significant events in the Vatican's yearly calendar and helps to define its diplomatic positions for the year.The pope took the moment to reference the United States' recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
"The principle established after the Second World War, which prohibited nations from using force to violate the borders of others, has been completely undermined," he said.
"I renew my appeal to respect the will of the Venezuelan people, and to safeguard the human and civil rights of all, ensuring the stability and concord," the pope added.
He called for an "immediate cease-fire" in Ukraine and expressed his support for a two-state solution to bring peace to the Middle East, while giving Palestinians a "future of lasting peace and justice in their own land."
Pope Leo lamented what he called a decline in multilateralism and global cooperation, leading to peace instead of armed conflict.
"They do not, therefore, wish to have peace, but only the peace that they desire," he said.
He said such a global mentality led to two world wars during the 20th century, but eventually produced the United Nations, which the pope said is tasked with "safeguarding peace, defending fundamental human rights and promoting sustainable development."
Among other topics mentioned were a rising risk of nuclear war and the emergence of artificial intelligence.
He urged a renewed effort to control the proliferation of nuclear arms as the New START Treaty is scheduled to expire in February amid efforts by North Korea and Iran to join the ranks of nuclear powers and Russia's repeated threats to use nuclear arms against Ukraine and others if compelled to do so.
Meanwhile, the emergence of AI "requires appropriate and ethical management" to ensure it is used to better the world and its societies and does not cause harm, Pope Leo said.
He also addressed matters involving migration, human trafficking and crime and cautioned against "undermining the dignity of migrants and refugees."
Then he addressed the need for greater communication to help people of differing backgrounds to more effectively communicate and establish meaningful connections, rather than remaining divided by language and using it to cause harm instead of doing good in the world.
